Dementia Simulation

The Dementia simulation was developed at Bucks New University by Technical Manager Sam McCormack in 2016. The SAS Team Uxbridge have been involved in the facilitation and development of these sessions; colleagues are also being trained in how to deliver the simulation to others so we can reach more people. To date, over 2,000 undergraduate nursing students have experienced the simulation!

The Dementia simulation provides participants with a very powerful learning experience.  They become fully immersed in a dramatic and dynamic simulation, which allows them to feel and experience what it might be like for patients with failing cognitive function who require support and care. It provides significant learning and development in a safe environment that enables participants, both as team members and individuals to explore this area of practice.

Student feedback:

‘Highly useful and beneficial experience. Very realistic and transformative. This has assisted in creating a powerful insight into personal practice and understanding of the Dementia reality. High commendations to the SAS Team’.

‘Very good insight into the possible experience of Dementia patients. Highlights the importance of talking to patients and treating them with kindness and dignity. Very worthwhile.’

In 2018, the Dementia simulation won teaching innovation of the year at the Student Nursing Times Awards!

In February 2019, Technical Demonstrator Kelly and Technical Manager Sam also visited The Royal Hospital Chelsea to deliver the experience to carers of the Chelsea Pensioners, the nation’s iconic Army veterans.

Carer feedback:

‘I was shocked, most of all empowered and challenged. The trainers are excellent, after the simulation, they advised us well; I have never had this before. Thanks and well done to the trainers, excellent!’

‘Thank you for this simulation. A great experience, it opened my eyes, so I can provide better care to our pensioners. Please do not stop what you are doing, because you are doing a great job’.

In May 2019, the team were immensely proud to be recognised as one of ‘The Nation’s Lifesavers’ by Made At Uni for the Dementia simulation and were noted for making a life-changing difference to health and wellbeing. Take a look at the Bucks Free Press article here!
